Runderwear male and female sports underwear

Running underwear isn’t something most people pay as much thought to as they should! Runderwear have attempted to solve this issue with underwear designed with sports-people so we decided to put them to the test…

Womans Croptop

We Say – I was really surprised at how supportive this crop top actually was. As it has no seams, padding or underwires I was very sceptical about how much support it would provide but I am happy to say it did the job incredibly well. My boobs are a B/C-cup so maybe for larger cup sizes it would be a different story, but for me there was no pain caused by the bounce of running – good times!

I did notice in a number of photos that my nipples were clearly outline through my running shirt. I’ve been told this is a common runner problem and I am perhaps just being a bit more sensitive about it that others would be but I can’t help the fact that this made me uncomfortable.

Overall I was happy with the product. It was really comfortable, much more supportive that I had anticipated and the moisture wicking material prevented any chaffing and dampness.

Womens Hipsters

We Say – Let’s face it these pants were never going to make the sexy undies drawer. The first time I put them on I thought ‘oh no I look like I’m wearing pull ups like a toddler’ but actually was pleasantly surprised when I put my running tights and top on. The Runderwear holds your body supportively in the right places and because there are no seams it creates a really smooth sillhouette underneath your running outfit.

There is some sort of grip to the fabric along the outer lines of the pants which holds them in position on your skin. This does create a rather unfortunate visible panty line but stops any horrid wedgies.

Again a good product overall. These pants create a really good body shape (which let’s face it ladies, that’s not easy in Lycra running kit) and they are comfortable to wear. The material works well to draw sweat away from your body so you don’t get a damp bottom and there will be no ungraceful unpicking of any material that had ridden up whilst you run.

Mens Briefs

We Say – I’m not ashamed to admit that back when I first started running, I didn’t pay much attention to my underwear choices and ended up suffering skin irritation around my upper thigh as a result. As a new runner, underwear just isn’t something you think about until you’ve suffered a bit of skin irritation, but I eventually found a few places which sold polyester undies which were almost, but not quite, designed for sports… pouch in front to hold everything in place – smaller seams to prevent irritation – moisture wicking material to prevent ‘clamminess’ – job done!

Because of this I was sceptical about Runderwear as I felt wearing briefs for running would be almost a step back, especially considering the shape appeared to lend itself to potential rubbing around the groin, however because of the materials Runderwear have used (a mix of 8% Elastane and 92% Polyamine – a synthetic material with high durability and strength) the briefs felt comfortable, lightweight, and as with the best underwear, you couldn’t feel they were there during exercise.

One slight negative is the price – at £16 a pair and with no multi-pack options available I can’t imagine most people wanting to buy more than 2 or 3 pairs which can be an issue if you train regularly – although for that price you are getting a very technical pair of briefs which are ideal for a variety of sports. I tested these during a number of long training runs (15 miles+), fast-paced interval sessions and spin classes and I didn’t experience any discomfort or movement.

Men’s Runderwear boxer – RRP £18

They Say – The men’s Runderwear support boxer are designed to give you maximum support with the highest level of comfort that you need from. Get support where you need it most with using Runderwear’s seamless technology. The fabric is engineered to wick moisture from the skin, helping reduce any irritation. Chafe-free, guaranteed.

Mens Boxers

We Say – As someone who typically wears boxers during exercise these were much more up my street than the briefs previously mentioned, however I was again sceptical about how much better these boxers would be over the sports boxers I usually wear which cost a third of Runderwear’s £18 price tag. In other words… do they really justify an extra £12 per pair?

Again I tested these throughout long training runs, interval sessions and spin classes and again they stayed in place very well and I suffered absolutely no irritation. This was helped by the fact the boxers feature a silicone strip at the bottom of each leg – similar to what you’d encounter at the bottom of cycling shorts – helping them to stay in place. It’s also worth noting that although the boxers don’t feature a pouch as such, they’re shaped in a way that while everything isn’t quite ‘held in place’, movement is limited and so there was no uncomfortable rubbing in that vital area.

I was so impressed with these boxers that I decided to put them through a long-distance test by wearing them during the Rome Marathon and despite the temperature gradually ramping up throughout the day, the boxers remained comfortable throughout and I didn’t suffer any rubbing or chafing despite the heat and distance covered. In fact I was so impressed that I used them again during a further 2 marathons in Brighton and Milton Keynes!

Well done Runderwear – you’ve managed to design underwear truly suitable for long distance AND fast paced exercise and we look forward to seeing what else you introduce into your range!
