Tribesports 2015/2016 Winter Clothing Range

Tribesports launched on Kickstarter, the crowd-funding website, back in August 2013 describing themselves as “The world’s first community-powered sportswear range [offering] premium quality at up to 40% cheaper than leading sports brands”. After raising £119,458 in 30 days from 1,818 backers, they’ve grown into an excellent and popular clothing brand, online presence and community with a website featuring an informative blog and a huge community formed of ‘Tribes’ in which members can debate, discuss and share training tips and running advice.

Although still relatively new to the market, Tribesports are growing fast and recently took over as the official clothing sponsor for ‘parkrun’ (free timed 5km runs which take part in a number of local parks all over the world – visit for more information) replacing Adidas as the official supplier of the free milestone T-shirts provided when parkrun juniors, adults and even volunteers hit certain event milestones (10 runs for juniors – 50, 100, 250 and 500 for adults – and 25 for volunteers) but how does Tribesports clothing perform as day to day running gear?  We tested their 2015/16 Men’s and Women’s Autumn/Winter Range over a 3 month period to find out…

The Spandex content mix in the fabric means that your tee will always keep its shape.

Tribesports - Long Sleeved Top

We Say…Dave: I received my top at the end of October and was really impressed with the feel of the material and the quality of the product.  When wearing it during a training run I felt that despite using Tribesports’ size guide I possibly should’ve gone a size up as I found the fitted style meant when wearing it over a compression top it would ride up while running, however the shirt was fine on its own and even better when used as a base-layer under the ‘Half-Zip Mid Layer’ as the weather grew colder throughout winter.

Tribesports website describes a number of performance features which may come across, to the inexperienced runner, as gimmicky such as ‘Ergonomic Flatlock Seams’ to prevent chafing and ‘zoned-ventilation panels’ for increased airflow and rapid core cooling. However as far as running tops go this has fast become one of my favourite base layers, and I’m sure when the weather starts to warm up I’ll be regularly wearing this on its own. It’s worth also noting a number of people have commented about how great the colour I chose (Cyan Blue) looks and the overall design really sets it apart from other running shirts.

Women’s Long Sleeved Running Top – £26

They say…Made from soft, lightweight and functional material, this Tribesports long sleeve running top offers both warmth and moisture management and works as an excellent sub-layer or top-layer for the autumnal and winter months.

We made this running top to go the distance. Engineered to keep you dry, fresh and comfortably covered up on those cooler mornings. The contrast colour blocking design is complimented with zoned ventilation and strategically placed anti-chafe side seams which follow the contours of your body, for an ergonomic, flattering fit. The soft, ultra lightweight fabric has a non-shiny finish (think the texture of peach skin) which looks and feels awesome. The elastane content mix in the fabric means that your tee will always keep its shape.

We say…Laura: This top is a lovely colour, very soft and lightweight and the fit and detailing compliment the capri running tights very well. I really liked the ventilation running under the arms and down the spine meaning that the garment was always allowing air to circulate. It fit well and the size guide online made it easy to select the best size for me. I tend to shy away from very fitted running kit as I’m very self conscious about my shape but this top was very flattering and I didn’t feel as though it exposed every lump and bump. I did notice that after a few washes there appeared to be a bit of a catch in the material at the back (where the breathable panelling is) and I was worried that it may result in a hole with future use/washes. I’m pleased to say however that this hasn’t happened and although the snag in the fabric is still definitely there it’s only noticeable when the top is inside out after a wash, and it’s still holding strong.

Men’s Half-Zip Mid Layer – £52

They say…This solid essential keeps you warm, comfortable and dry for every run, every day.

Incredibly versatile, Tribesports Mid Layers are made of soft, high performance fabric for warmth and protection. Wrapping to the contours of your body, this running top keeps you warm for those colder morning runs. Once you’re warmed up, the advanced wicking fabric will keep you dry while the zip provides swift temperature control when you step it up a gear!

The nylon and elastane blend stretches 4 ways and is warm, lightweight and durable. The fabric is brushed to give the garment a luxurious softness feel.

Content: 92% Nylon, 8% Elastane.

Tribesports - Half-Zip Top

We Say…Dave: As someone who tends to run in minimal clothing and has never been a fan of half-zip tops I didn’t think I’d find much use for this style of race clothing and initially mainly used it as an extra layer while travelling to races, however as the temperate dropped I decided to give it a go and without a doubt this is now one of my favourite training tops!  While I tend to run with the zip open, the material itself is incredibly comfortable and when combined with the long sleeved top I still felt comfortably warm, even when the weather dropped into the minuses during some of our early morning training runs.

Again the top features a number of the performance features as per the long sleeved top described above but with the addition of a small zipped pocket at the back – too small to fit most modern smartphones, but very handy for holding a key or some emergency loose change although I’ll admit I was a bit jealous that Laura’s female version came with thumb-holes while for some reason the men’s version didn’t! One thing which may put people off is the price as at £52 this isn’t a cheap top, although at the same time you get what you pay for and with this top you’re getting a great piece of kit which I’m sure will last a long time.

Women’s Half-Zip Mid Layer - £52

They say…The Tribesports half zip mid layer is ideal for keeping warm and sweat-free whilst trying to beat your personal best. This slim fitting running top features soft, brushed fabric for comfort and warmth. Also featuring reflective elements to help you stay seen in low light conditions.

mid layer

We say…Laura: This is my favourite piece of the kit by far. The material is soft and has a really cosy feel to it. I love the thumb holes so I don’t get annoyed with my sleeves rolling up whilst I run and the mid-zip is great for adjusting mid run depending on how you’re feeling – if your getting a bit warm pull it down for a bit of extra breeze and zip it up to the chin if you’re a bit nippy. The fit of this jacket is also very complimentary of the capri tights and the long sleeved top when worn together. It’s very comfortable and it definitely did live up to the promise of keeping you dry and moving the sweat away from your skin. I generally get very hot when I run and I did find that when I wore the long sleeved top together with this mid layer I actually felt a bit too hot but I think that is just personal to me and every runner is different. I recently tried a longer run wearing just the mid layer and that worked perfectly for my body temperature and is now my go to running top for colder days.

Men’s Running Tights – £35

They say…The Tribesports Men’s Running Tights are there to help you hit your running goals, with stretchy fabric that allows smooth, natural chafe-free motion and so soft you will never want to take them off. They are made with sweat-wicking stretch fabric and strategically placed mesh for comfort and breathability from start to finish.

Perfect for cooler weather, these men’s running tights will keep you on the road when the temperatures drop. These lightweight tights are easy to move in and give the same performance run after run, thanks to the high stretch material that returns to shape even after it’s been washed. Finished with reflective details to help you get noticed when you run at night and ankle zips for quick changes, with super grippy silicone trim to stop the tights riding up.

The material is made up of 88% polyester and 12% elastane to provide a comfortable fit with maximal mobility when running. The fabric is lightweight and breathable to regulate your body temperature and durable enough to survive many seasons’ worth of training.

Main: 88% polyester, 12% Elastane / Mesh: 80% Polyester, 20% Elastane

Tribesports - Leggings

We Say… Dave: I’ll admit I’m not a fan of running tights – partly because I feel like ‘Peter Pan’ or maybe ‘Robin Hood’ while wearing them, but also because I’m always left slightly confused about whether I should be wearing shorts over them (for reference, for ‘real/club runners’ the consensus is ‘no – it looks silly’ although that doesn’t stop them doing it themselves when it gets really cold!).  However clothing etiquette aside, over the years I’ve discovered running tights are an essential piece of kit during obstacle races as they prevent shredded knees when crawling through barbed wire and provide insulation when trudging through freezing lakes, so I couldn’t wait to put these through their paces.

I chose the cyan style and I felt that by choosing all the blue themed clothing, the colours and styles went really well together and out of all the Tribesports kit I tested these tights took a serious beating as I wore them throughout a number of early morning sub-zero training runs, Nuclear Races’ obstacle course and Brooks Hellrunner’s ‘Hell Down South’ mud run.  This last event included the Bog of Doom – a 2 minute long trudge through a freezing cold neck-high muddy river - and they performed brilliantly throughout everything I threw at them and still look as good as new after constant use.

Women’s Capri Running Tights – £32.50

They say…The Tribesports women’s running capris offer a tight, supportive fit matched with innovative fabric for optimum comfort. They boast a higher elastane content to create a softer, thicker feel. Reflective elements, mesh panels for breathability and a secure zip-up storage pocket complete this go-to running piece.

The Tribesports Women’s Running Capris feature mesh panels and ergonomic flatlock seams for breathability and natural range of motion on your run, in a fit that hugs your body. Spandex adds stretch to the fabric and helps you move without restrictions, whether you’re in the yoga studio, at the gym or on the field.

The innovative fabric mix will keep you dry and comfortable by wicking sweat away from the skin to the fabric’s surface, where it evaporates quickly. Finished with reflective details to help you get noticed when you run at night.

We say…Laura: I really liked the fit of these running tights. I’m always a little sceptical when it comes to sizing with items like this as I tend to float between an high street 10 and 12 (I wish they made a size 11) so it’s always a bit of a worry ‘Will medium be too big or will Small be too small?’ I opted for a medium after looking at the size guide on the website and they fit beautifully. The material was soft and did indeed feel thicker than other running tights I have worn. The drawstring in the waist made it easy to ensure they weren’t falling down while I ran and they were really breathable. I’m only surprised that they were capri length and that a full length running tight is not available as this is what I would expect with a winter range.
