We Say – I had heard of these tablets before but I have never had the chance to try them out, so I was excited to see what they were all about. I know the principles of replacing the electrolytes you sweat out as you train and Nuun claim their tablets do this without the additional sugars found in many sports drink.
To start with the packaging, the tablets come in a convenient tube which fits nicely into a cupboard. They are thinner than a spice rack jar but slightly taller. They come in tubes of 12 tablets and they recommend one tablet per 16oz which is just under 500ml, I found one tablet was strong enough for me even when using a bigger bottle.
The first tablet I used was the lemon and lime, I plunked it in my bottle and then filled up with cold water and watched. Slowly the tablet started to dissolve and the water started to fizz up a little, after around 30 seconds or so the tablet had dissolved leaving no trace of sediment in the bottom of the bottle. I have used other brands before and found they left some nasty looking scum on the top of the water, which was not a pleasant look, but with the Nuun tablets there was no scum. This was pleasing to see and helped with the positive first experience. The saying goes that we eat and drink with our eyes as well as taste and smell, the all important first sip went down well, it was refreshing and I finished the bottle off. Nuun tablets make a nice change to drinking plain water, for sure.
Over the next few days I was working night shifts and I do sweat more than most when at work due to the extra gear I have to wear and carry for my role and I can be very active running around here and there. I can suffer with cramp in my right calf when I sleep in the day, so I popped a tablet in my water bottle and drank this through the night. I can report I had no cramp in my calf at all during this set of shifts. This maybe a coincidence and will try a tablet in my bottle for the next set of night shifts which will be in a few weeks.
I have run a couple of times since using the Nuun tablets and I haven’t seen my times get quicker, but then I am in training for my spring races so my aim is to get the miles in by running the long slow runs. I have suffered with cramp when running previously and this hasn’t happened on the recent training runs so it will be interesting to see how I go when the weather gets above 20 degrees. I think these will be an added bonus to my nutrition for my first ultra marathon in June and will spice up my water for the event. I will make sure I have some packed in my kit for then.
It is key to stay hydrated in winter just as much as in summer and a friend had said to try one of the Nuun tablets in hot water. The first time I tried this I had just finished a long run in the ice cold temperatures we had recently and I had those ice cold sweats. It was a tri-berry flavoured tablet. I dropped a tablet in a mug and as soon as the kettle boiled I poured the water over the top, now the tablet had an instant fizz and the mug was filled with bubbles so I stopped pouring the water over. This is where I had to be patient to let the bubbles die down and slowly pour more water on top. The tablet seems to react quicker to hot water and was dissolved in no time. If you remember finishing swimming as a kid and had a hot juice this is how I would describe the hot Nuun taste. This hot Nuun and a nice warm shower soon warmed me up in no time at all. A hot Nuun is definitely worth trying.
I have been sent the following flavours of Nuun tablets; fruit punch, lemon and lime, tri-berry and cherry limeade. The cherry limeade one is caffeine enhanced which I understand helps get the electrolytes into the system quicker. I liked all of the flavours and I would have said that the tri-berry was my favourite however when I last picked up the tubes the lemon and lime tube was nearly all gone so maybe that was! All of them taste good and are refreshing. If you liked the ‘Dibdab’ sweets when growing up as a child then you will certainly like the taste of the cherry limeade flavour.Â
I will be continuing to use these tablets as so far they have had positive effects to my training and recovery. It will be nice to see how they go during the summer months.
