Founded in 2009 during a ride in the Yorkshire Dales by avid cyclists Alex Raistrick and Simon Warren, Shutt Velo Rapide’s mission is simple; to create their own brand of well designed, high quality cycling garments in Sportwool that do not cost a fortune.Â
Using traditional cycling jerseys as its inspiration, Shutt Velo Rapide has created a mixture of cycling wear from sporty to casual, feature rich and designed in complimentary colours. Shutt source almost all of their materials from British manufacturers, truly enabling them to create the best in British made cycling clothes. They are extremely proud that each of their garments has been designed and manufactured by hand in the UK.
Long Sleeve Training Jersey in black/olive – £89
Made in Britain
They Say - ‘Shutt’s Training Top is truly a jersey for all seasons with long sleeves in Merino Sportwoolâ„¢ fabric it has become essential wear for all types of road riders and racers. It is also proving very popular with the mountain biking and cyclo cross communities. It’s a firm favorite with our customers and employees alike because of its year long versatility. A great jersey for 3 season outer use and a great base layer for winter because of it high merino content.Â
As with all Shutt jerseys, the training top has three rear-reinforced pockets, reflective strip and soft tip zip puller.’
We Say - ‘Initial impressions were a good-looking black jersey with a really nice olive green coloured back panel in a different material. The classic relaxed look and discreet logos, well placed reflective strips and details will appeal to the older rider and could be happily worn on or off the bike.Â
Although retro looking, I’d prefer a longer zip for better temperature regulation. The jersey has enough length on the front and back with no elastic on the hem so the grippers did not work effectively. I really liked the feel of this jersey with the sport wool stitching going horizontal on the arms and vertical on the front with the back having good wicking material, which kept me feeling fresh.
It has the usual three deep back pockets with the middle one narrower and only wide enough for tubes, smart-phone or pump. It has an unnecessary Velcro fastener at the top. I was not mad on the narrow middle pocket, as the backbone area needs the most venting. I put my rubber tube to the side pocket or under the saddle and phone to the side for easy GPS map reading.
The arms were a good length with the under arms slightly baggy which didn’t bother me but the short front zip did. I could not move the zip up or down with one hand whilst riding which was really annoying. A solution would be to use a slightly chunkier or better quality zip. A little more height and reinforcement to the collar would also help and give a more structured appearance. I found the cuffs a little on the over tight side feeling that the stitching was being pushed to the limited when passing the hand through. I don’t have gorilla hands and the jersey was XL.’
In Summary – ‘The more I wore this top the more I liked it, standing up well to washing. It’s a nice relaxed looking three-season merino sportwool training top. Considering the jersey is made in Britain I also think the price is very reasonable.’
