We Say – This base layer from Gore looked great on first impressions. The fit was excellent for my 6’2″ frame in the XL size and the material felt soft but durable. The cut consists of a mesh layer for effective wicking of moisture with a front panel that is windproof for cooler days. This ‘Windstopper’ fabric worked great at keeping the cold at bay, which improved when paired with the Alp X 2.0 Thermo Jersey. It also extended from the usual front panel to wrapping around the kidney and over the shoulders area too for extra comfort. A small reflective Gore Bike Wear logo on the top of the front panel helps improve visibility if you have your jersey zip undone a little. Something that I found I did not do in this long and cold winter and spring (even summer now!) season. The hems and flatlocked seams have Gore’s usual high standard of quality and the durability of the whole garment has been excellent for around the three months of regular testing and washing.I found it really hard to find fault with this base layer apart from not feeling as warm as some of my other ‘deeper winter’ base layers. This is probably due to it not having arms and using a jersey that is not quite up to combating really cold weather.
In Summary – A really great windproof singlet base layer that is perfect for spring and autumn or windy early morning summer rides and mountain descents. Not quite warm enough for deep winter with the Alp X jersey unless paired with another base or a very good winter jersey. I think it’s perfect and really can’t see how it could be improved.
Rating – This deserves 5 out of 5 and I thoroughly recommend it.
